Chapter Seven
The party was as chaotic as Harley had feared. His mother had hired a catering company, at least, but his five siblings plus spouses and children and cousins and other family friends amounted to a massive crowd.
Ray had, thankfully, met a good number of them before, so he didn’t look too uncomfortable. For a tall guy, he was very good at making himself smaller and part of the scenery. Harley couldn’t blame him. His mother had been startled about them sleeping together so quickly, but when he’d said they were going out to dinner the next night, she’d smiled broadly and told them to have a good time. She had made herself scarce long before they got back from the nice Chinese place that Harley had picked.
Harley wasn’t spontaneous, and he certainly didn’t get so wrapped up in another human being this quickly, but it just seemed so easy to fall into whatever this was with Ray. They had had a good-natured argument about car brands earlier at their restaurant, and it had been like talking to an old friend, and then they’d made it home, and Ray had eagerly fallen to his knees to practice giving head, and he’d proven that he was a quick study. Yeah, he lacked the practice and experience, but man did he take direction well, and he was pushing Harley’s buttons as quickly as he could discover them. It all just felt simple.
The party, however, was nowhere near that easy. Harley hadn’t made any big announcement when they’d entered the large farmhouse, but none of his family members were stupid. They had noticed fairly quickly that he kept a proprietary hand on Ray’s shoulder or waist, and gossip spread. His mother didn’t help matters by winking. Ray took it mostly in stride when the teasing started, but he’d been beet red.
The farmhouse was technically still owned by Harley’s grandparents, but since they were both in poor health, it had fallen to his mother to look after the place. She used it when they had large family gatherings because it was huge and the yard was enormous, so everyone could cram in with room to spare. She planned to retire there when she had built the business to her satisfaction, but Harley didn’t really believe that she’d ever settle into a quiet retirement.
Harley had also met his father’s girlfriend, which was an experience he wasn’t keen to repeat.
He had been in the kitchen grabbing drinks for both himself and Ray, when a blonde in designer clothes came up on his right and grinned widely. She was wildly over-dressed for a family party, and she stood out like a sore thumb.
“Hi! You must be Harley! I’m Veronica,” she said with emphasis that clearly indicated he should already know who she was.
“Uh, hello.” He took her outstretched hand and shook it. “Do I know you?”
Her smile fell slightly. “I’m your father’s girlfriend? I’m sure he’s told you about me.”
Harley shook his head. “No, not really. Mentioned that he was dating someone, but not much else.
